The objective of NanoCode is to define and develop a framework aimed at supporting the successful integration and implementation, at European level and beyond, of the Code of Conduct (CoC) for nanosciences and nanotechnologies (N&N) research as developed by the European Commission.
Basing on the Commission recommendation (07/02/2008
http://ec.europa.eu/nanotechnology/pdf/nanocode-rec_pe0894c_en.pdf) and the outcomes and results of the 1st Draft Master Plan an “assessment scheme” relating principles of the CoC with identified criteria and indicators of good practices will be developed. This scheme will enable a practical assessment of the level of compliance with the CoC’s principle and it will then be implemented in the MasterPlan as a simple tool (CodeMeter).
The CodeMeter will enable stakeholders to make a (self–) assessment of the adherence of a given activity involving nanotechnologies to the principles and values of the CoC. It will make operational the requirements given to comply with the CoC and it will offer a neutral and objective benchmark which can be applied to any organisation active in N&N research (both research community and research governing bodies). The CodeMeter will be conceived as a tool that will remain to be used also once the project is finished to allow periodic assessment checks, to have indication on absolute performance and improvements in the application of the CoC over time.
Objectives of the national workshops to be discussed with the invited stakeholders:
• description of project objectives and findings;
• discussion of stakeholder positions and expectations regarding the Code of Conduct;
• presentation of the 1st draft of the Master Plan;
• articulate consensus or absence of consensus on the contents of the Master Plan;
• evaluation of performance assessment of Codemeter tool.
